Paul Overy: Profile

Paul Overy’s research interests include the history and theory of 20th century art, architecture and design, with a particular emphasis on European modernism and the avant-garde between the wars, contemporary British art and architecture and the art and design of Eastern Europe. Publications include works on the Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, the Dutch art and design group De Stijl, the architect and furniture designer Gerrit Rietveld, the Romanian artist Paul Neagu and the British architect Norman Foster. He has also worked as art critic and reviews editor for newspapers and magazines and has curated a number of exhibitions, including contemporary Hungarian Art, the work of the Chilean painter Roberto Matta, the paintings and graphics of the Bauhaus artist and teacher Josef Albers, and Rietveld’s furniture design and architecture. Recent publications include essays on the work of the Russian artist and designer El Lissitzky and on Brian Housden’s Brutalist house in Hampstead of the early 1960s. He is currently completing a book about international modern architecture and design between the wars.
