Jon Bird: Profile

Jon Bird has written extensively on visual culture and contemporary visual arts. He was a founder editor of Block and co-editor of the Routledge ‘Futures: New Perspectives in Cultural Analysis’ series of books (1993-96). With Lisa Tickner, he was Series Editor for ‘Re Visions: Critical Studies in the History and Theory of Art’, and he is Editorial Co-ordinator for the Oxford Art Journal. Recent publications include Rewriting Conceptual Art (co-editor with Michael Newman, 2000); Leon Golub: Echoes of the Real (2000); Otherworlds: The Art of Nancy Spero and Kiki Smith (2003); Hans Haacke (co-author, 2004). He is an independent curator of contemporary art; most recently he curated the Leon Golub retrospective at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (which travelled to the South London Gallery, the Albright-Knox Museum, Buffalo and the Brooklyn Museum, New York, 2000-01), and ‘Otherworlds: Nancy Spero and Kiki Smith’ for the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead (2003-04). From 1985 to 2000 he was a Trustee of Artangel.
