Elizabeth Lebas: Profile
Elizabeth Lebas has continuing interests in French theoretical works on the city and urbanism; having translated and edited, amongst others, writings by Henri Lefebvre. Research has included the filmed representations of urban and housing reform in Europe between the wars and the history and representation of modern landscapes. She is presently working on the design and gardening of urban and suburban open public spaces in the early twentieth century. She has co-edited with Stuart Elden and Eleonore Kofman Henri Lefebvre: Selected Writings, 2003, and recently published ‘From Beautification to Sustainability: the Inner City as Political Landscape’, in Mark Dorrian and Gillian Rose, eds. Landscapes and Politics, London: Black Dog, 2004, and ‘Sadness and Gladness: the Films of Glasgow Corporation 1922-1938’, Film Studies, 2005. She is currently co-curating an exhibition, ‘Sadness and Gladness’ – the Film Sponsorsip of Glasgow Corporation 1922-1978, opening at the Lighthouse in Glasgow in March 2007, and guest curating The Suburban Landscape: 200 Years of Gardens and Gardening, an exhibition at MoDA opening June 2007.
