Adrian Rifkin: Profile
Formerly Professor of Fine Art at the University of Leeds, Adrian is the author of Street Noises – Parisian Pleasure 1900 – 1940 (1993) and Ingres then, and now (2000). He has researched and written widely in cultural and art history on topics ranging from popular music and opera to Kantian aesthetics and gay subjectivities, and is currently preparing a series of extended studies around this latter subject under the title of ‘Hyperventilation, the search for a banal beauty’, which will evolve a queer lacanianism. He also writes on contemporary artists and is working on a series of articles on Richard Wagner and other musical questions, including Wagner’s techno heritage, as well as critical studies of problems in contemporary art historiography. He was previously Editor of the journal Art History.
