REVISIONARY SUBURBIA

Introduction

A Research Collaboration between the School of Art, Philosophy and Visual Culture & MoDA

Middlesex University’s Cat Hill Campus is situated in a classic interwar suburb. A considerable proportion of the University’staff and students, and of the visitors to its Museum of Domestic Design & Architecture live and work in the vicinity.

Thus the Study Group on Everyday Life has been formed of academics from APVC (Art, Philosophy, Visual Culture) and MoDA, with the aim of exploring research issues related to suburbia and the suburban landscape, and of developing outcomes which have both a sound academic basis and a relevance to a wider audience.

So far, this has resulted in an exhibition In Search of Suburbia, which took place at MoDA from October 2005 until March 2006. This was accompanied by a conference, entitled Return of Suburbia on Saturday 18th March 2006.

Future projects will include a book about suburban gardens, The Suburban Landscape, due for publication in June 2007, and a further exhibition, Suburban Landscape Revisited, again in 2007.
