Peter's Smoking Room

A project by Andrew Kearney, AHRC Research Fellow

Peter’s Smoking Room

This audio installation is sited under the covered outside entranceway to the reception area of the Cat Hill campus. Two audio speakers are placed on the underside of the freestanding umbrella-shaped canopy that provides a sheltered area for staff and students outside the main front enterance.

The audio consists of selected data about the Cat Hill campus that has been taken from archival material as it was under construction 1973-1978, which is now stored in the library at Cat Hill. Male and female with different accents read the text aloud, these statistics are heard as you leave and enter the building. With 148 audio clips which are played in random order and range from information about the structure of the site to the various services necessary to sustain it. For example: the type of brick used in the building, the wattage of electricity used per month, or the species of plants in the landscaping.
