In November 2005, the culmination of the Necessary Journeys initiative was an international symposium and book launch at Tate Modern. Edited by Melanie Keen and Eileen Daly, Necessary Journeys was conceived as a fully-illustrated guidebook, featuring artists’ pages, new writing by Bernardine Evaristo, Kitty Hauser, Sukhdev Sandhu and Sarah Wood, and prefaced the incisive essay by Caryl Phillips’, from which this initiative takes its name.
