NEWS reproduces around 30 cards from an idiosyncratic manual index system held by the Media Archive for Central England (MACE)MACE, inherited with some thirty years of regional ITV news footage. The selection plays on the ‘A to Z’ classifications of diverse news materials dating from the late 1950s, ranging from the prosaic to the curious, while noting the shifting preoccupations and elisions of the ‘foreign’ or ‘strange’ over three decades.

Both NEWS and REEL were conceived as starting points for larger works. Extending the residency with MACE into 2007, the project will continue to explore the visual and textual rhetorics of the Central ITV news archive, and possible artistic/archival tactics of collection, documentation, annotation, retrieval, and re-presentation. Working with some 4,000 cards collated from the index system, the aim is to develop and significantly expand NEWS into a more substantial bookwork, which extrapolates on implicit narratives of the ‘strange’ and ‘foreign’.
