Summary of Research Activity
Jim Grant has been working on the Bungalow Blitz project since 2001 when he developed a series of paintings based on plans drawn by Jack Fitzsimons and reproduced in the first edition of Bungalow Bliss. To see images of these paintings click here
Later in 2001 Grant began working with Joanne Lacey’s interview transcripts and developed a new series of paintings, many of which were simply painstakingly enlarged sections of transcript painted with the colour schemes used in actual bungalows. To see images of these paintings click here.
In addition to these paintings, Grant developed two installation projects as part of the first Bungalow Blitz exhibition at MoDA. The first, Couch involved work with furniture borrowed from Donegal bungalows and was developed in response to the three story stairwell space between the permanent and temporary gallery spaces while the second, Render responded to the architecture and display fixtures of the gallery and was constructed out of a range of construction and archival materials including pebbledash; asphalt; hand and power-tools; timber; newspaper cuttings; family snapshots; turf; collectable cottages, etc. Click on Couch and Render to see documentation photographs of these installations.
While Grant exhibited paintings from the Untitled Transcripts and Plan-Untitled_ series at both Bungalow Blitz II at the Limerick City Art Gallery and Bungalow Blitz III at the Letterkenny Arts Centre, his more recent research project, the live installation Design No.8 was not exhibited until 2004 when it was part of Bungalow Blitz: Another History of Irish Architecture I at the Walter Phillips Gallery (Canada). This installation was re-enacted as part of Bungalow Blitz: Another History of Irish Architecture II in 2006 at the Lighthouse: Scotland’s Centre for Architecture, Design and the City.
